British Gas Homecare Agreement

I have a homecare policy with British Gas and included is an annual boiler service. This service was due and I booked a visit only to have it cancelled due to CoVid which I understand. My policy is now due for renewal and the price has increased by nearly £40 for the year. As I haven’t had an annual service, wondered where I stand. I checked on the British Gas website and I am looking at April for a boiler service.

  • Shop around, they are not great.  Consider the alternative to insurance, which is to set aside an amount equal to the premium each month, so you have a fund with which to pay a proper gas fitter to service your boiler annually and deal with any problems.

I pay the absolute minimum for basic cover, with an excess, just in case my excellent gas man is unavailable when I need him, and he does a thorough service every year for £70.  Much better than the 5 minute "hook up a laptop" nonsense that masquerades as a service that the big companies provide.
  • Thanks for the advice. My cover is more than just boiler cover but I will certainly do my homework. Already seeing much cheaper cover on what appears to be a like for like basis.

I notice that Halifax has a packaged bank account that gives home emergency cover amongst other benefits like AA cover, mobile phone cover etc so thinking of switching my account and just paying separately for a boiler service. It costs £17pm but you can get a £5 reward each month if you pay out £500 in direct debits OR keep £5000 in your bank account each month which reduces it to £12 pm which is a good deal. Will properly research it first.
