Golf SV - views and alternative?

Am looking for a medium sized car for our small family of 3. Golf SV ticks a lot of boxes - cheap second hand (less than 10k), lots of space and decent boot size. Would go for petrol as am not sure how frequently I might use it. Wife suggests looking at bmw 2 series active tourer or Audi A3 / Q3. Am a bit apprehensive about the premium models as their maintenance costs can be high. I’d prefer SUVs but none fit in my budget.

If you want space, SUV's aren't necessarily the answer. You will find more space in a Škoda Fabia estate than many SUVs. That Rylan Clark ad that shows a family of soon to be 4 children with a 2 series active tourer will find the car seriously lacking on space with prams etc. The Q3 boot is not big at all. If you're not looking for high driving height, you are far better looking for an estate, which will also be better for fuel economy also.1

We had a Qashqai. The boot was hopeless, all sloping angles. We met up withe friends once. They arrived in a yaris, with a compact electric wheelchair in the boot. It was almost impossible to fir it in the Qashqai boot1
