Where to: Buy the cheapest REAL Christmas Tree?

Hi there...Im suprised to see no conversations about these, so....where is the best place to get a Christmas Tree? There are loads of "off the street" people selling them, but what about the DIY stores? Hows the quality? Do they "shave" the trunk with the huge tree "sharpeners" I've seen before?

I'm also after a pot grown one if anyone has any tips. Something small for me as it's just a token gesture! ( I hate all the naff tinsel and glitter! )
  • Last year I waited until the 15th December to get one and managed to pick up a 6 foot tree from B&Q for a fiver. All christmas related stuff was being flogged as clearance.

Couldn't believe it - we never put our decorations up until at least the 21st, so I reckon the 15th was a bit premature!
  • Got one in ASDA for £15

I saw some in my local Homebase and they were in a very bad state at the front entrance. Nice size, about 3' but £24.99.
"Which" recommends watering all types (very important) and if not in a pot, you should cut at least 3cm off the base and keep well watered. ""Wherever you buy your tree, ensure you see it unpacked first, and select a specimen with a symmetrical cone shape. Make sure it's been stored outside at all times: as long as it has, it should be possible to keep it looking good for the whole Christmas period.
Run your fingers over the branch - the needles should bend, but not break or fall off. Check the base and choose a tree with at least 20cm of straight, bare trunk." They also say... "If you do decide to go for a pot-grown tree, make sure that it is just that - not simply dug up and plonked into a pot with soil around it. Look for the terms 'container-grown' or 'living tree' or, if possible, lift the tree out of its pot to look for the roots. If you do go for a living tree, transplant it into a bigger pot when you take it outside after Christmas."

My local B&Q have potted trees.
Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
  • We got ours free from Homebase last year - in fact we got 2- on Christmas eve! It's a family tradition that the tree is not put up until Christmas eve - they're often half price by then anyway, but last year was particularly cheap!
