  • Etoro is also free.
  • I have tried both Freetrade and Trading212, and I am lucky to say that I have an active account on the latter.

I sometimes joke about Feetrade, they charge 0.45% on top of any FX rate, and a lot of securities are behind a paywall.  Essentially you can trade some stocks for free - just pay the broker/exchange fees on some securities, or upgrade to £9.99 a month so you can access more shares.

Trading212 has had its glitches around about half 2 when the US market opens, and has had to temporarily pause new signups.  A lot of platforms have.  I would suggest you wait, or compare with eTorro, but I think they also experienced issues driven by a significant volume of new users.

There are a couple of things for me - cost is not always number 1, but the choice of investments available on a platform, and its ease of use.

I found this website as a good interactive Broker comparison.
Beside Trading212, eToro, FreeTrade. From all of these brokers, unfotunately it is only Trading 212 is offering S&S ISA account free of charge. In fact, eToro does not offer ISA
I remember someone mentioned about XTB https://www.xtb.com/en
I have not had a closer look at XTB so can not present my personal opinion. But it seems to me they are not offering individual stock trading.

Degiro is worth investigating but it's not quite free, but then neither are any of the other trading apps mentioned here.

It seems promising for general investment account (non ISA).. I do comparison between between Degiro vs Interactivebrokers.
This is what they have come up with
    https://brokerchooser.com/compare/degiro-vs-interactive-brokers
Also would like on investigate other feature. What about the range of stocks that you could trade. Could you get majotity of US stocks similar to Trading 212?
Also is it possibile to buy OTC penny stock ??
Also I do not see them to be included as the best 15 EU brokers in these comparisons, for whatever reason I do not seem to understand.

Overall I am happy with the products that Degiro offer. Degiro stopped offering UK CFDs a couple of years ago while I had significant holdings. It was a nuisance but the change was professionally handled in my opinion. I try hard to avoid helping anyone to buy OTC penny stocks. Degiro offer a very extensive range of European stocks (they connect up to all the Eurex and Euronext exchanges). Their lists of US stocks looks good to me although today is the first time that I have looked at those particular lists (they seem to include all constituents of the Dow, NASDAQ and S&P indices). I also noticed today that Degiro's platform gives access to Japanese stocks. I would be happy to answer the question about how Degiro's range of products compares with Freetrade or Trading212 if I could sign up with either of the latter.

Degiro do not offer demo accounts but it is possible and economic to open an account and trade with £100. It's actually possible to open an account with 1p. Degiro do not offer ISAs or SIPPs. While they are FSA registered and they have a UK presence, their base is in Netherlands.

I suspect that the comparebrokers.co site is generated by bots. The English is poor and the graphics are dated. My guess is that not a lot of human thought has gone into their many lists of the "best 15". I am less alarmed that Degiro are not on their lists than I am alarmed that Trading212 are neither on this list nor on the list of members of any recognised stock exchange.

My understanding is that Trading212 uses intermediate brokers to execute trades. IIRC during the Gamestop mania it was revealed that it e.g., uses Interactive Brokers for trades in the US.

I've been playing with eToro and Freetrade over the past week. So far I'm still using virtual money on eToro but have put 50 quid into Freetrade.
While I am happy to keep my main investments in an established provider such as HL, I can see the attraction of these app based platforms for some more speculative investments into products which aren't available elsewhere such as cryptocurrencies and fractional shares.. If it all crashes and burns then no great loss.
