About half an hour ago, my missus was using the laptop, then put it into sleep mode. Five minutes later I went to use it and it had switched off! So after waiting for it to boot up, I looked at the Event Viewer. I haven't had time to look at the info pbartlett supplied, so I'm just looking at the Windows Logs/System stuff. I can see when the laptop was put in sleep mode (the event in the log says "The system is entering sleep. Sleep Reason: Button or Lid"
Then nothing until the time I switched on again, then I went through the entries and saw these ones of interest:

Error: The previous system shutdown at 17:57:49 on ‎16/‎02/‎2021 was unexpected.

Error: Dump file creation failed due to error during dump creation.

Critical: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Warning: The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000.

Error: The LMS service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.

Error: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000009f (0x0000000000000003, 0xffff8006476bb060, 0xffffa68cb903f810, 0xffff800652d53010). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 83715ed9-a450-48de-9fda-522e29e63217.

I've found Memory.dmp but can't open it - I probably couldn't make sense of it anyway.

    Any further thoughts anyone?

it seems to indicate that the laptop is not shutting down from sleep but rather waking up and then collapsing
  • Why are you putting the laptop in sleep mode instead of switching it off, especially overnight?

Because it wakens from sleep much quicker than it does from being powered off, then on. Isn't that obvious?
BTW, it had switched off again last night - discovered it this morning. I'm going to note the last time I put it to sleep each night to see if there's any pattern.

I always put my laptop to sleep every evening - I just press the power button. Have you checked to see it is not powering up before shutting down?

Yes, I do exactly the same - quite a few times during the day and in the evening before bed. On my laptop, when I press the power button momentarily, the screen shuts down and an illuminated ring around the power button slowly fades on and off. So, no, it is not powering up at that stage.

sorry I meant once you shutdown and you go to bed, could the laptop be powering on at eg 3am and then shutting down, rather than shutting down direct from sleep mode.

I guess that's a possibility. I really need to take note of the time of the last 'sleep' in a day and if it is powered off when I check it in the morning, what happens during the night (as shown in Event Viewer). I need to be more methodical.

Because it is good practise to shut down and restart any computer regularly because it lets the operating system clean up and empty the cache and RAM, save files etc and perform "self tests" on start up. This helps prevent "crap" building up and slowing the system down.
Any PC left on continuously or in sleep mode, hibernation or hybrid sleep will become sluggish over time.
How many times when there's a problem with a computer has it been cured simply by turning it off and back on again?
