Replacing sink, keeping the pedestal

Hi,

We would like to change the washbasin in our Cloakroom. It's a pedestal one, where the wooden floor has been installed around. I don't want to mess with the floor, as it is new. Can we replace the sink, keeping the old pedestal or is it a terrible idea?

Thank you

  • You'd have to choose the new basin to have a similar bottom profile to the existing, or else it wouldn't sit very neatly.

Any small difference could be taken care of with a neat silicone bead, but it would have to be small.

An alternative would be to find a basin & pedestal where the ped base is larger than your current one, so it'll cover the visible floor cutout. It's ok for the pedestal to sit on top of the flooring - you wouldn't need to cut around it again. What I would do, tho', is to fill the existing hole with an offcut of your floor so that it's at the same level (doesn't have to be neat - it won't be seen) - that'll ensure the pedestal is supported well regardless of its base design.

Once the new ped is in place, run a bead of sili around it and finish it off with a rubber tool - you won't want any water that runs down the ped to get under the floor and to the cut edges of the boards.

Alternatively, look at vanity basin units. That will cover the hole!
  • Or, do you have spare flooring? Enough to replace the planks that have been cut?

Thank you. I do have some offcuts and spare planks. Maybe I can look into a slightly larger pedestal or a vanity unit and see if I can plug the gap with an offcut (or get a plumber). I just don't want to have to change half of the Cloakroom, just because my wife want to change the tap. Which is how most things start. Can we change the tap to a mixer tap? Yes, we will have to change the sink. To change the sink, we need to change the pedestal and to change the pedestal, we will need to amend the flooring we installed a few months ago 😂
