Question about default account

Hi,
Looking for some advice. I have a defaulted mobile account of about 6months, outstanding amount is < £50 but i was intending to contest the account due to the fact it was never used following a breach of personal data by the phone operator. They gave my PAC to a fraudster who used the phone number in a failed attempt to authorise illegal credit card transactions. Anyway, i was planning on pursuing the matter with the ombudsman but i've let it slip and now i have a default account which is likely to impact a rental application. Other than that, i have a decent credit file
Question is, whats the best way to try and mitigate this for the rental application? Should i just pay it off and wait for the file to be updated, or leave it unpaid and add a comment to my credit file to say this is contested while i pursue this with the phone operator?
Thanks for any help, much appreciated

Letting Agents do not have access to default/payment data when doing credit checks. They will see voters roll, CCJ, bankruptcy/IVA data but not financial commitments such as credit cards and phones.1
