Duvets are such personal choices, no one can say that a 4 tog is any better or worse for you then a 4.5, Just remember if its too cool, chuck on a blanket

    Sensible.
You can make a lighter tog duvet warmer by adding another layer at the times you really need it but you can't make a ridiculously warm duvet cooler.
Exactly the same as you can add a cardigan to a t-shirt but if all you're wearing is a fisherman's jumper and you're too hot, you can't really take it off in public.

The only criteria I have for a duvet is that the outer fabric has to be 100% cotton.
Duvet covers, pillow cases and sheets have to be cotton too.

While I generally agree with you on cotton I will just bring up pure linen bought in charity shops here which is often beautifully softened by all the laundering its had and is an absolute bargain at times.

I don't think you'll convince me on 2nd hand bedding.
It's one of the few things (including used knickers YUK!) that I wouldn't buy from a charity shop.
I would need to open it all out to make sure it wasn't stained or torn or scuffed from toe nails and for a king size duvet or super king flat sheet, that would be pretty difficult in most charity shops I've been in.
Of course, I'd be up for any 100% natural material new and have looked at linen.

Dressing gown makes a good temporary blanket if you can be  bothered to get a blanket.
