Barclaycard (Forward) sharing data with Social Media Companies?

I’m considering a Barclaycard Forward CC so I’ve been taking a look at their T and Cs.

As well as all of the organisations that I’d expect to see – CRAs, Fraud Prevention Agencies etc – it says:

‘We’ll keep your information confidential, but we may share it with….Social Media Companies so that they can display messages to you about our products and services.’

What on earth does that actually mean in practice? Anyone know?

I don’t trust companies such as Facebook and I haven’t knowingly given them any of my details in the past.

  • I clicked on one credit card advert on FB, than my feed is full of different credit card adverts, all sub-prime. In that time I can honesty say Barclaycard hasn't come up in my feed. I did independently pick Barclaycard and was accepted for the Forward, I like their other products like the Barclaycard rewards credit card which I would like in the future when worthiness is better. Even after getting the Forward card no adverts in my feed.

To share your information (for example, your mobile number and email address), in a secure format with social media companies. They can then match this to personal information they already hold about you so they can display messages to you about our products and services. If you do not want us to share your personal data with social media companies for this purpose, you can tell us not to. • Where we have a legitimate interest in using social media companies to share information with you about our products or services that may be relevant and beneficial to you.
So basically, it's to advertise to you.

2021BJ – I’m not sure why I didn’t read that full privacy policy before I posted that question! Daft!

Anyway, it states that they won’t share your personal data with social media companies if you tell them not to, but it doesn’t really explain at what stage it’s appropriate to inform them. Are Barclaycard expecting people to contact the company’s Data Protection Officer with their opt-out wishes even before they’ve submitted details to the eligibility checker?

I suspect that as soon as you press submit on even the eligibility checker then your details will be passed around like a plate of biscuits.

Can anyone who’s applied for a Barclaycard Forward card remember if there were options during the sign-up process where they could opt out of their data being passed to social media companies?

  • I emailed Barclay's Data Protection Office at the same time that I posted on here, asking them to clarify the opt-out process, but they haven't bothered to respond. What a waste of time.

So your complaining that they haven’t replied to you yet as it’s only been nearly 5 days since you sent an email?

I would imagine that with people working from home that things are going to take a little longer than normal for them to reply to you.

It could also take them a while to find out the information they need to reply to you again because many are working from home or even less hours than they normally would.

A little patience goes a long way!!
