Compensation for damage to credit?

Years ago I had a lot of debt and a single digit credit rating but over the past few years I've been really managing my credit score building it up and ensuring I have no missed payments etc. I called a debt company I owe at the end of December to make my monthly payment and the woman on the phone said oh your next payment isn't due until the end of January as you made 2 payments in October, i did question this as it sounded wrong, I did make 2 payments but for 2 separate months, 1 at the start one at the end due to the way my paydays landed that month but she assured me I didn't owe anything until the end of January. So I said "Oh OK then, I'll save myself some money for this month and pay at the end of January as I will have been paid again by then." So I paid my next payment at the end of January. Turns out this woman didn't have a clue what she was talking about. I checked my credit score at the weekend and it is showing a missed payment for January. I've called this company back, and the person I spoke to apologised etc. Her colleague was wrong. I paid the payment that was missed and they have raised a complaint as the advice I was given has badly affected my credit and has affectively set me back a few years as instead of my last missed payment for anything being in 2018 it's now January 2021 and missed payments stay on your file for 6 years. I'm waiting for their complaints team to get back to me but has this ever happened to anyone else? Can I fix the damage that has been done? If not would I be entitled to anything from this company? Any advice appreciated.

Your credit score is meaningless. I would imagine they will fix the report to update the missed payment.

The damage has already been done by the original default, I doubt one missed payment from a debt collection agency will have much of an impact on you, the credit score means nothing in real terms, its your credit history that counts, and in the grand scheme of things, this is a mere blip, I wouldn`t worry too much about it.

  • Thanks guys, I meant my credit history/file more than the score, like I said I've been managing my credit to repair the damage and have not missed any payments for anything for years because once the default has been removed from my file and I've built up a good credit history in a few years I'll be looking to get a mortgage so I didn't want this missed affecting anything as it isn't my fault.

As has already been said, one missed payment on a file with defaults will make very little difference.

Besides, this can easily be remedied by simply removing the missed payment.  As far as anyone but yourself and the company are concerned it never happened so there is no need for compensation as there is no loss to speak of.

When the default goes, the whole account history goes with it, that`s why I said its a mere blip that won`t have any long term affects on you, the missed payment marker won`t be there another 6 years, only until the default drops off your file, so not as bad as you thought !!

Thank you, as you can tell i have zero understanding on how this works. I just know I don't want to rent for the rest of my life and I messed up earlier in life, have been trying my best to fix it and then this happened. Appreciate the responses!
  • I think regardless of whether some judge it as a blip. It's the principle behind the matter, any missed payment when it shouldn't have been there in my opinion should be rectified if they made an error - whether it is defaulted or not. I imagine if you've had an apology then the complaints team will easily rectify the reporting. I used to work for a bank in collections on debt so I know it can be done. By principle it matters and you have worked hard to repair your credit so deserve that to be reflected.
