wireless only works when laptop connected

Hi,
This isn't covered in wireless sticky as far as I can see. Apologies if I have missed it...
PC wireless connection to a router, however only connects if the laptop is also connected. Otherwise it flashes that is 'acquiring network address'. Finally it gives up and tells me there is limited connectivity.
I don't think it is a distance problem as I can find the network fine, but not connect.
Many thanks
Nick

Are you sure the PC is connecting to the router and not internet sharing/connecting through with the laptop?

The pc only connects if the laptop is connected wirelessly at the same time?

    encrypted, which router?

limited connectivity = not authenticated to the router, so usually wrong encryption key or type, or mac address filtering not setup properly if you use it.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Sure it is not sharing the laptop's connection, have certainly not ticked the "allow network users to access through this computer".
PC and laptop are not even networked together, apart from both having access to router.
    Buffalo cable router.
    WEP encryption.
Odd thing is sometimes it does work on it's own.
    Thanks for replies though.

I might try uninstalling my network card, and setting up the PC network again, making sure laptop is off.
