My 85 year old mother has just had her renewal letter for car insurance nearly £500 I have been on comparison sites and got it down to around £200 by putting my 60 year old sister on as main driver (which she is) The only thing is would my mother be fully comp as well ? as she would now be the non main driver, i have looked through quote but cannot find anything.

It's the car which is insured "fully comp".
However if either of the named drivers were to drive another vehicle on the basis of this insurance then that would not be.1 -
Thanks for clearing that up General0

If the policy is a comprehensive one, the comprehensive cover applies to both the main and additional drivers.
Possibly you are thinking of the driving other cars cover which (on some policies) will allow the policyholder to drive cars that he/she doesn't own, but usually on a third party only basis.1 -

However it is whatever the policy states (and you asked for).Going anything than fully comp only saves pennies (or costs more) though IME. Though I am over 40! May be a reason to go there for younger drivers.

The fully comprehensive cover doesn't necessarily apply to the car.
You need to check the wording of the policy and if you are unsure you should phone them to check.0 -

Some policies do have a higher excess where the driver is below a certain age, and this could make them effectively third party only where the named driver is young and the car is of low value, but this is unlikely to be an issue where the drivers are 85 and 60.0 -

A few high end insurers (Hiscox, Chubb) do offer policies that will cover all named drivers to drive other cars on a fully comprehensive basis - but again those policies tend to be the sort of thing you have to go out of your way to find. And they're not cheap - they're aimed at the sort of people for whom price is not the main factor in their buying choices.1 -

Never looked into it properly as I don't really move in the right circles to make the best use of a "fully comp to drive other people's cars" policy, alas.
I did get a quote a while back out of curiosity and it was actually probably about in the middle of all the sane quotes I got but they required you to buy home insurance from them too and there the policy was exceptionally expensive.1
