Temporary fix for leak under tap

  • Hi guys, thanks for the help, I've been waiting for the self amalgamating tape to arrive, now I'm not sure about using it!
You can't see really well in the pictures sorry but the leak isn't coming from the nut/bolt/joint thing, it's coming out the bottom of the mixer tap, where it has all rusted away in the corner. Any ideas?
  • Wow! It's rusted right through?!

Water off, abrade the surface with a coarse file, and epoxy it.

Or, use a few tight turns of amalgamating tape as suggest before (ok, I like the idea now...) and then add a 'Jubilee' (hose) clip over it. Tighten down until it's nicely squished. (You can fully undo these clips, slip them over the pipe and redo.)

Depending on what you can find in your garage - a piece of rubber matting, something like that - could be used instead of the tape.

Self amalgamating tape or self fusing tape (same thing) will Do it.

Turn the water off, dry it a little and wrap it with the tape a few times and let it fuse together  It's great stuff and works. You can even wrap it without the water off but you don't have to. It will last for few months so gives you plenty time.

If it's just the washer then do that, but it may be a hairline crack, seen that loads of times.
