What sort of toys/books for a 2 yr old?

Does anyone have any suggestions for toys and books for a 2 yr old? It's for my nephew, and I live a long way away so don't see him enough to have a good idea of what he's currently playing with!

I would choose some good colourful childrens books that he can enjoy as stories - some that DS loves would be "The Gruffalo", "The Guffalo's child", "We're going on a Bear Hunt", Percy the Park keeper series, Hairy Maclairy books plus others by the same author. All of these are a sensible length for a bedtime story and probably within the grasp of a 2 year old (or at least over the next year as he grows). The first 3 all have a pleasing rhyming nature as do the Hairy Maclairy ones - my DS (nearly 3) tries to read along with some of these as he's heard them so many times (at his insistance) that he knows parts of them by heart!

Toys are harder to choose as it depends much more what they are into and have already whereas its very hard to have too many kids books (particularly as a parent as it cuts down the number of times you have to read the same ones - those I've listed I can still stand after umpteen readings!)

I like all of the books mentioned by Weston Dave, and agree that books make great presents. Other books that are good are ones with magnetic pictures that can be stuck to the pages again and again, so the child can interact with the story.

Some chunky shapes for threading are good too. Like these.

I don't know any 2 year old boys (or 3 or 4 year olds for that matter) who do not like Thomas the Tank Engine in all his many manifestations - books, toys, dvds, board games, jigsaws - if that helps. Books are easy to post, and parents like them, but even for the most bookish child they lack the Wow factor when the parcel is first unwrapped at that age!
  • He does love books so the suggestions above are brilliant, thanks everyone :)

I had thought of thomas the tank engine but although he loves it, he's apparently suddenly changed his mind recently and is ignoring his big train layout. So mebbe not

Strange question but are Dr Seuss books suitable for reading to a 2yrold ? Or a bit old for him?

(oh and I doubt the wow factor is a problem.. he's a spoilt little thing! ;) )

Dr Seuss are great for a two year old. My daughter loves green eggs & ham!
