Issues with authentication on Transunion

Hi there,

Wondering if anyone has any ideas on an issue I'm having with Credit Karma and Transunion. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I've been a long-time user of Credit Karma (in fact since it was Noddle), with no issues; always been able to see my credit score and all was accurate. Some months ago, my credit score changed to 9999 on the app but there was no detail on my report in terms of accounts etc. I hadn't changed anything myself, either with the account/app or in terms of moving house/opening new accounts/coming off the electoral register (I'm on it and have been for a long time). Equally, my Clearscore and Experian accounts are fine and have remained normal.

I've been in touch with Credit Karma who say the issue is with TransUnion. I tried to get a statutory account via Transunion which said my credit file was 'thin' and that the couldn't authenticate me online. I really don't understand how or why anything has changed! They've suggested I provide further information and they can manually process a report for me and post it to me.

Does anyone know how this affects me in terms of my credit file? I'm hoping to get a mortgage later this year and assume that if Transunion can't authenticate me then a potential lender would have the same issue if they used Transunion? If so - what can I do to force Transunion to sort it?

Thanks again for any thoughts/advice.

  • Just raise a query over it and they'll resolve it. Few lenders only use TransUnion so I wouldn't be overly concerned.

Love the 9999 score for having no accounts though!

Thanks for the reply. When you say a query do you mean a complaint? I've been in touch with their customer services who, as I said, just suggested them sending me a manual report - I'm not sure they understand the full extent of the problem so perhaps a complaint will get it looked at sooner...
  • I’ve seen a few posts popping up about credit karma I wouldn’t worry any lenders who check that credit file will probably check experian and Equifax too they usually check 2 of them. Just raise a query and let them resolve it they’re clearly having issues with a lot of people.

The first thing that I would do if I was in your position would be to submit a Data Subject Access Request to Transunion. By that I mean a FULL DSAR rather than just a request for information relating to your financial standing. That way you can see if their computer systems still hold information about you that you would expect them to hold.
