Ex partner opened accounts in my name

My ex partner opened (and closed) Amazon accounts under my name to hide his activity and delete data now that we are separating. I paid for our Amazon bills. Amazon reps have told me I have 5 Amazon accounts in my name.  On 14 October 2020, I was locked out of the Amazon account I knew of; it has a long and numerous purchase history,; Amazon Prime paid for a full year in advance and Subscribe & Save items. Amazon have been sending me S&S items that I don’t want but I can’t get into the account to manage them. My ex partner’s purchases amount to thousands of pounds and it is vital that I get all my data back from Amazon for the purposes of my financial claim against my partner. He has been financially abusive in other ways but his Amazon orders are a significant part of the picture. Amazon have sent me an email denying any abnormal activity on my account. This has caused me immense stress and distress. It is a complete waste of time trying to deal with Amazon. Should I take Amazon to Court for a “non monetary claim”. Should I contact the police. Please help!

If your ex-partner has fraudulently opened accounts in your name then you should contact Action Fraud.  You should also be able to submit a Subject Access Request to Amazon to get the information it holds on you.

The Subject Access Request is the best way to get the information you need from Amazon.

The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

can you raise a formal complaint through amazon?  you may find that all accounts will be frozen while this is being investigated.  but it may be a good idea to ask amazon to close all accounts with immediate effect as well to protect yourself.  as you are the account holder, you have the right to ask that all accounts are closed down.

you can also report to action fraud as mentioned above to get your partner investigated.
  • I'm so sorry this happened to you, it's also worth contacting the police just so the ex's name is tied to fruad in records. I know this sounds stupid, but may protect other people who could be victims in the future.
  • It's fraud, nothing less than that. As another said report to police, then update Amazon. The police will fully investigate all accounts etc, his and yours and will build up a good picture where the funding was coming from and going.

Rest assured once the police are involved, they will get all the data they need. It will take time but justice will prevail.

Identity theft is a crime so the police will act.
Good luck and i hope it works out quick

Report to the police, get a crime reference number, then go back to Amazon with this .

Meanwhile, raise a formal complaint with Amzon about being blocked from your actualcccount and request that this is frozen (so no more items are sent or charged) that you are refunded for the items you did not want, and that they refund you for the Prime membership.

have you already been through their online complaints process? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=G9NMDH46UFNMFNKN

The other thing you could try is the money problem page of your newspaper. - https://www.theguardian.com/money/series/bachelor-and-brignall-consumer-champions is the one for the Guardian, the Telegragh has their own and no doubt other papers do as well - they are often helpful when someone has hit a brick wall, so could be worth a try!
