Virgin Media

7 years ago I moved house and recieved my final bill of £130 from virgin media. I rang up to dispute the amount and they claimed it was correct but we made a deal that if I pay £100 they would clear the rest.

I agreed, paid and thought nothing more of it.

Almost 6 years later I applied for a mortgage and was denied. I checked my credit file and was made aware that for almost 6 years I had a missed payment every month from virgin media of £30 which was causing a default. I got in touch with virgin media and they denied any agreement, I had no proof so I accepted there was nothing I could do.

I spoke to the bank and they suggested I wait a few month and we try the mortgage application again once the 6 year period was up and the debt would automatic be  removed. Thankfully a few month later my mortgage was accepted and I put the virgin media frustrations to the back of my mind. February 2020 I became a first time buyer.

February 2021 I recieved a letter and cheque from virgin media explaining that they noticed an error and they owed me £95 from an old account. I have not had a virgin media account in the last 7 years, the error was on the account that I disputed.

What should I do? Should I follow this up or leave it be?
Obviously the cheque was cashed immediately 😉

What is it you want to happen?
  • There’s nothing to follow up they’ve clearly audited their customer accounts and you’ve benefited nothing more than that

Had the same letter from Virgin a few weeks back saying they owed me money too for the same reason as yourself. Again it was for an account i had years ago probably 2008-20012 - somewhere in that period. A cheque of around 85 pound

It looks like alot of companies, 02, Virgin etc have been scamming customers and the legislation have caught on and fined them big for this. So they are going back and settling old bills. 02 got fined 10.5 milion a few days ago for something similar. Expect a redress from them too if you been a customer.

    No. Just No.
They are not scamming anyone and are not being fined for scamming. O2 were fined because of an error where approx. 140,000 people who left the network were accidentally double charged - they have refunded everyone they could contact (with 4% interest) and were penalised so almost no-one is going to get any cash from this as they already had it. No legislation has "caught on", O2 reported the mistake to the regulator themselves.

Virgin were fined back in 2018 for charging "excessive" penalties for people who broke their contracts because the fees were not "sufficiently clear" up front. The charges themselves are 100% legal as Ofcom notes on the report I linked. 82,000 people were affected, with an average charge of £34, 6800 were charged £100+. 99.8% of affected customers were already refunded. OP had a final bill, not an early leaving charge so isn't affected
