Tyres. Front - rear query.

Car is a BMW 2015 Active Tourer 225i XDrive.
In a 'normal' world I would just replace all four tyres together but will it be OK the leave the  oem summer Bridgestone run flats on the rear wheels and put Bridgestone All Season run flats on the front only ? I will do the rears later in the year.  Same make, all run flats, just a slightly different style of tyre.
Cheers
Brian.

As a generality, more grip on the rear.

ESPECIALLY when you're talking about summers vs all-seasons, in the middle of a bloody cold February.

If the rear loses grip, you're all over the shop. It's far easier to control loss of front-end grip.

I'd replace all four now, though. Sure, you're "wasting" a little bit of tread from the front pair, but... really...? In the grand scheme of things, is that a big issue?

As its an Xdrive, your handbook should have info on how your tyres should be rotated and replaced.  Read it and understand it.

Significant mismatch in tread depths and type may cause expensive issues with the xdrive system.

If it was any other car I'd say yes but as it's an Xdrive they really don't like to have unmatched tyres fitted, it could knacker the transfer box and subsequently cost you ££££. Also, are the tyres the same size anyway, some configurations have different sized wheels front and back?
  • X Drive....change them all. There's plenty of horror stories of knackered transfer boxes caused by mismatched tyres.
