OAP Advice

I am just contemplating taking on my OAP. I have a forecast for it being reduced as I was contracted out for a period. Not a problem I understand the reasons.
However I have 42 qualifying years in total and can therefore buy additional years to close the gap.
My question is why if I can buy years to fill the gap, don't the additional years I have paid into not automatically fill the gap?

@xylophone has a much quoted and repeated post which explains how people were transitioned from the old to new system in 2016 - see his post in the thread hereNote that in your situation, only purchase of additional years from 2016 onwards will possibly add anything to your forecast.
