Clearing out my dad's flat - told I need to remove carpets.

I don't know the answer beyond what I have read here. I just wanted to say I am ever so sorry for your loss and that they are making unreasonable requests at a time like this.0

What about Covid? Is it safe for their residents to let you or others in to the property? Is it safe for you to go there?2

That's exactly what I was thinking.... just adds to the unreasonableness of their request IMO. Sorry you're having to cope with this.

Sorry for your loss, I can imagine this is the last thing you'd want to deal with at this time. I think @HampshireH has it right. Look for a copy of the move-in paperwork or inventory, and ask for a copy if you don't have one to see if the carpet was gifted. As others have said - they can't bill or chase you personally for the money, they would need to pursue the estate.0

Make them give you substantial time to get it sorted ask for an extension of what’s left so it can be sorted.0

It won't be worth it. The extension will mean more rent charges. Would be cheaper to leave it there and for them to charge the estate for removal and disposal I suspect.Carl2510 said:Make them give you substantial time to get it sorted ask for an extension of what’s left so it can be sorted.

I'll be handing in the keys in the next day or so, after which I intend to send a stern email to the people in charge. Even if I rightfully should be responsible for the carpet (and I'm not entirely convinced that I am,) it was their responsibility to ensure that I was aware of that - and telling me less that 5 days before I'm due to hand the keys in (weekend inclusive) is not time enough for me to make suitable arrangements. The fact that the guy who called me was so quick to provide me with a phone number of someone I could hire makes me believe that he's likely on some sort of kickback. If they do try to charge me or my dad's estate, I'll see what my options are but I don't intend to pay unless I absolutely have to.The more I think about it, the more I'm equally appalled by how they simply handed over my dad's keys to me without asking for any identification whatsoever. I gained access to the apartment, my dad's bank cards, his computer, all his personal information - and to this day, they don't have one shred of proof that I am who I claim to be. They know nothing about me at all other than my name and my phone number.2

Carpets are not furniture. If they are not stated then they have no case0
