Automatic renewal of house insurance - how to reclaim if unnoticed

Options
On seeking a deal for my home insurance in December I noticed that the previous year I'd paid house insurance to two companies due to not having cancelled automatic renewal on the current insurance. They've offered me half the amount I paid as a refund. Can I claim the whole amount? I didn't make any claims. They did email me a reminder for renewal - my only excuse is it expires on Boxing Day, it's the busiest time of the year and I just did not see it.

Have you approached the other company?

As you say, it was your fault and even if there were no claims involved they will still have incurred costs and so a 50% rebate isnt bad.

To get best prices you should be dealing with your renewal 3 weeks out and so whilst the renewal itself is boxing day it should have been the quieter start of Dec when you dealt with it.

The rationale behind only being offered a 50% refund may be that you had insurance cover with two companies so each would only have had 50% exposure in the event of a claim.  You need to contact the other insurer and try to reclaim 50% of the premiums from them too.

The companies will often communicate with each other and agree the refund basis between them.50% each is a common outcome as they would have each covered 50% of the liability if there was a claim.

I wasn't just preoccupied on Boxing Day 😂, the entire month of December is hectic isn't it?
  • Thank you everyone for your help. I shall contact both insurance companies to hear what they say.

But you had enough time to arrange the duplicate insurance policy?
