A friend has just purchased and installed this into their computer https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pioneer-BDR-212EBK-internal-Blu-ray-support/dp/B086X8WGC8/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 it doesn't come with the required software.
He cant find any free software that will work with it....Cyberlink says DLL's missing...VLC wont touch it, any ideas please?
After reading the reviews it says it won't play 4K UHD discs, is this same as a bluray disc?
We have seen several expensive possibilities, but ideally would like a free/safe software program.
Would be grateful for any help and advice.

Computers and bluray are a pain. The purpose of the drive bought was more for backups as a writer (though hard drives are cheaper these days). There is no official 4k support. Standard 1080p support depends on passing requirements (secure monitor etc).Free software can do it. But it is not worth it for the pain."Cyberlink" as you say but surely mean PowerDVD does it fine (I use version 17 to do it (there is no reason to upgrade once bought!). However I wonder what spec of machine and OS they are using if they have issues. I am not sure the trial supports bluray, but I may be wrong. I know only the ultimate or rental versions support bluray and not the cheap one though. If only non 4K support was needed it would have been cheaper and easier to buy a stand alone player. Any bluray capable pc's monitor will be able to plug in a bluray player (sounds is a seperate thing unless going thoug hdmi). It will still be cheap to get a seperate player than buying the software to play it and jumping though all the hoops.1

Wrong drive for UHD playback. .
They needed either the Pioneer-BDR-211EBK or the Pioneer-BDR-212UBK.
If you want to use Cyberlink software; here is a link to the hardware requirements: https://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdvd-ultra/spec_en_GB.html
They offer a free 30 day trial, so you can see what the drive can do: https://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/trials/powerdvd-ultra/download_en_GB.html
You can buy older versions for less if the software proves useful.: https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/830957652
Personally, I would change the drive to one that supports UHD playback if that is what they need.1 -

If only Full HD, perhaps not an issue. Tell them to download and evaluate the Cyberlink software. Once they see what works and what doesn't over the trial period; they can decide to perhaps go for a older and cheaper version of the Cyberlink software or to modify VLC or Windows Media Player 12 for that purpose(http://www.mediaplayercodecpack.com). An alternative is the https://www.leawo.com/blu-ray-player/
Though personally, I would begin with Cyberlink software as it will be the easiest with which to get started. Once you know what to expect, you can experiment with other options.1 -
Thank you 'The right one' he is on with that now.
