Admin fees for cancelled holiday

Hi, bit of a tricky one here so I’ll try and explain the best I can.
We booked a holiday some time ago but due to the threat of Covid still being high, we cancelled in October last year. The holiday was due to take place on 1st of March. When we cancelled we were told there would be £300 admin fee for the cancellation which we paid as it looked as though we could travel to America in March at the time but we didn’t want to risk it.
Obviously now we cannot travel in March and our orignal booking would have been refunded in full. I’ve asked the holiday company we booked through and they said no the fee will still stand as we cancelled and not the other way round. Would this seem right?
Thanks!

As you cancelled the holiday. The terms of the contract rule.1

Agree with the others. Nothing due I am afraid. You cancelled.0

+1 in agreement with above. Your account was done and dusted once you cancelled. It’s a bitter pill but could have been worse.0

that is correct, had you asked on here before cancelling you would likely have been advised to pay the balance in full when due as if the holiday was cancelled you would be due a refund. As you chose to cancel before the holiday company cancelled the terms and conditions would have applied.

Out of curiosity who did you book with and was the £300 deducted from your deposit ?0

Yes, this is correct. You took a risk and it didn't pay off; if you hadn't cancelled you'd have had to pay the lot.
Some gambles don't go your way - that's life, and it was a calculated risk.0
