As long as you heat the water overnight at the cheap rate, you shouldn't need to use the day 'leccy to boost the temperature - that's how it should work!!!

I wonder if, perhaps, the previous occupant didn't use much hot water - no baths, instant leccy showers, etc - so asked for the E7 elements to be swapped to just heat the top of the tank each night?!Unlikely but possible.0

Indeed, but you don't need to 'boost' the whole of the tank if you haven't got enough hot water.neilmcl said:

It's the only reason I can think of why someone would have done that. Maybe someone else has then found it's not enough hot water and instead of swapping it back, have jacked up the temperature (or even bypassed the thermostat entirely).Jeepers_Creepers said:I wonder if, perhaps, the previous occupant didn't use much hot water - no baths, instant leccy showers, etc - so asked for the E7 elements to be swapped to just heat the top of the tank each night?!Unlikely but possible.
It's a worry that the top element is not being limited by the high temperature trip. The OP might want to ensure that both thermostats are the newer type containing a high-temperature safety cutout.2 -
I spose another reason could be the bottom element failed and this was done to save paying out for a plumber.
Financially, even if the t-stat is bypassed it would only be 651 units for January, so doesn't account for much of the £300.
Meant to add, it would be a good idea to have the header tank inspected to check it hasn't been weakened by the boiling water.1
