Artificial grass

Hey guys
I'm looking at replacing the turf in my back garden with artifical grass. It has to be dog and kid friendly.

If any one has done the same which brand did you use and how do you find it? Also for a sub base did you use type 1 hard-core then sand or just sand. I'm reading mixed guides online

Any help appreciated thanks

I used Grono grass on my back garden. I used type 1 and sand. The reason I used Grono is you don’t have to put sand over the top of it after fitting it. It has been down a few years now and if I could afford it I would replace the front of my house  with the same thing

I chose Easy Lawn Rosemary for a project as it has a few colours in it, including a bit of dead brown, so looks less fake.

Hardcore first, definitely.  You want a stable base.

Yep. Best thing we've done to our garden. I agree with Doozergirl, you want to choose one with some yellow and brown in there. Looks very realistic. Dog loves it, he doesn't get muddy or try to dig it up like he did to our grass. Great for grand kiddies to play on all year round. Never found it gets too hot (we are in the south), and doesn't smell (although we do hose down the one area our Elvis tends to use as his toilet space)!!
Hard core put down after grass removal, granite dust and membrane. Been down 4 years and looks as good as the day it was fitted.

Personally I dislike artificial grass. Even the good ones look fake, they are terrible for wildlife and will just end up in landfill eventually.
well that's your opinion. mine is that personally I love it (if done well).

I tend to agree with you, but I can see some advantage in a small, urban space such as the one @Doozergirl pictured.

Yes I agree, in places where grass won't grow properly it has it's uses. @Doozergirl situation is a great example

It can look OK, but I'm more against it for it's environmental impact

I agree that it has it's uses but only in confined urban spaces, balconies etc where it would be difficult or impossible to grow the real thing. There is something therapeutic about pulling up daisies (before I begin pushing them up for eternity) and watching birds picking worms & insects. And the smell of mown grass in the summer is part of life itself.
