Driveway length

hi,

we have exchanged on a new build which is still not complete. We drive passed the property yesterday and noticed the block paved driveway is significantly shorter than when what we expected and what showing on their website as a site plan.  At this point we doubt we will be able to fit our car on it without an overhang

Does anyone know if there is any legal guidelines on what length a driveway should be? Or if the length of the drive should be included anywhere on any planning permissions that we can refer to?
I would appreciate any advise anyone can give

thanks

They should be building everything in accordance with the plans approved by the planners - so have you checked against those?
  • Too short for one vehicle?

There are often minimum lengths specified in planning - especially if converting an existing garden to off-road parking and applying for a drop kerb. 4.8m is the standard length of a parking bay. To compare, a Qashqai is about 4.4m long, a Mondeo estate is 4.9m.

But what do your plans from the developer show...?

And where has the length gone? Is the house nearer the kerb than you expected, or does the blockwork stop short of the house?
  • Thanks both, drive opens on to a shared access private road . The site plan that the planning permission refers back to doesn’t detail the actual end point of the drive, so I am hoping there is something out there which actually details the length of the driveway surely this would need to be available for the sign off of the building regs?

You sure there aren't more drawings with the planning papers providing that detail?

    Your boundary...
  • Hoping when you've already exchanged doesn't sound like a good position to be in.

There's got to be more plans with the planning application after all how else would you access your property?

I would also check if any more recent applications adjacent. Developers have been known to slip an extra unit in and ruin people's access in the hope it won't get picked up.

Aren't all the papers available on the planning website?
