I've let my passport expire.  I could do with taking a new photo but I could do with a haircut first!

It's lucky that most of the photo shops have been closed as well then isn't it  :D

The government have warned this afternoon that passports 'may' take up to 10 weeks to be processed, at the moment that isn't the case but if you need a new passport, apply sooner rather than later
Don't they say that every year?
They do, but if they are correct in saying that normally 7 million people a year get a new passport, but last year only 4 million did, and if this year goes back to normal in applications, that's a lot of extra people applying this year.
Also think of all the people who didn't apply because the Passport Office was closed for corona. Given how last minute most people are, i wouldn't like to be in a hurry for a passport this summer, they're gonna be swamped.

Letting your passport lapse isn’t a brilliant idea as you are classed as a new applicant when applying . So digging out birth certificate etc.

i renewed my passport last month. Filled in online form on Monday morning and posted my old passport using signed for. Can get this on  RM website. Got my passport the following Tuesday.

Not true, you can renew a lapsed passport for quite some time after the old one expires without being treated as a new applicant. I did so last year.
  • Etch is correct.  If you can’t provide your passport, however, it will probably take longer, depending on circumstances, you may be asked for further information.
