Sleeper lawn edging

I have a small raised area at the back of the garden that has some small trees growing. The previous owners used cut up tree trunks as lawn edging. I want to place them with untreated oak sleepers.

I envisage a low retaining wall that’s 3 sleepers high. The soil is clay. I’ve looked at corner and straight brackets to secure the sleepers to each other horizontally.

Questions:

- do I need to secure the sleepers to the ground? I’ve seen stakes for sleepers and some people will drive a  steel rod through all sleepers and into the ground.
- can I lay the sleepers on the clay soil? Should I use some sort of MOT base? Concrete? Gravel?
- do I need to secure the sleepers to each other vertically?

Comments

  • Sleepers need to be staked into the ground & steel rods are the way to go. The sleepeers should sit on about a 2inch deep layer of pea gravel (10mm gravel). If you go on youtube there are some really good clips on what to do.
  • I'm no help, at all, with all the logistics but - i inherited this layout in my last place and it gave a nice, rustic, feel - i think you'll be glad you did it 👍
