    Ok. Thanks. Not sure you understand. Maybe you do. Car is registered 1st March 2018. Come 1st Feb 2021 - have paid the additional £325 + £150
    1st Feb in 2022 I will pay the same.
    1st Feb 2023 - would seem unfair to pay the additional £325 + £150 for the whole year! If that’s the case I will SORN the car for a month between now and then to stop the additional charge as the tax would be due 1st March 2023 and as it is 5 years old the additional £325 won’t have to be paid ...’

    if the £325 is due to be paid for 5 years from the second time it is taxed then that will be 2019/2020/ 2021/ 20122./ 2023.
    The reduction will not be until March 2024.

    Not necessarily...
    The liability to the premium is for the first five years from first reg date. So, yes, it gets charged on any VED purchased in the first five years. But it doesn't get charged on VED bought after five years...

    So if the car is taxed at the start of March 2023, it does not carry that £325 extra...

    It's a bit late now, unfortunately, but with lockdown this February might have been a good month to have the car SORNed and offroad?  Then taxed again from 1 March 2021.

    It will be March 2023. Check any car registered in April 2017 on gov website and it will show date until the extra rate is applicable. For example, for car registered in September 2017, Additional Rate applicable until 31 August 2023.
    So far car registered in April 2017, rate will be until 31 March 2023.

    I know I’m responding to an old thread but I was trying without success to find a definitive answer to this. I then came across the below which states;

    After 5 years of paying the additional rate

    You will no longer pay the additional rate. Your vehicle will be taxed at one of the standard rates depending if it uses petrol, diesel, or alternative fuel.

    If the date your tax is due for renewal is not the same as the date the additional rate ends, the vehicle tax payment will be adjusted to take this into account.

    If you make a single payment then this will be calculated for you and the remaining additional rate will be included.

    This was on the gov.uk site under vehicle-tax-for-cars-registered-from-1-april-2017 (sorry as I’ve only just joined MSE I’m unable to post the actual web link)
