More rural + detached feels like you're aiming for some increased distance from others.  Do you currently feel cramped by your neighbours and/or neighbourhood?  If so, then this new place will be perfect for you both.

As a gamer myself, I appreciate the sacrifice your partner is making here with the out-of-town internet.  He sounds like a keeper :)

I understand how your feeling. We sold our large semi that we had spent a fortune on and have just bought a detached bungalow. The bungalow isn’t habitual and needs about 80k spending on it including extension.
I have to admit the day after our house sold I did think what have we done but that feeling has gone now. Our new house however is only 5 minute walk from the old house so the area is the same. Only you can decide if the area is for you. I’ve temporarily moved to a more rural area while work is done and I have to admit I hate it and can’t wait to get back to our normal village.
Good luck with what you decide
  • Orangey, what prompted the move in the first place? Something must have? You've said lots of positive things about your current house, but something still gnawed at you both to make you want a change? What was it? And does it still apply?!

Is 'detached' a much more attractive proposition than 'semi'? It is for most folk (me included), but what about you? Or do you just see this move as an obvious 'next step up the ladder' - something you think you 'should' be doing? In which case, fair dos too; some folk just sit happy with what they have, others like to always move forward. There's no right or wrong, just what's right for you.

"It needs full renovation. However it is at a good price" is the stand-out line in your post for me. Is this something you actively want to do? Are you up for doing a lot of the work yourselves? And will the house reward you with a nice step up in value? If yes, yes and yes, then I think that should assuage your concerns a good bit; you can - if you want - think of this house as a 'medium-term' proposition if it helps. By medium-term, I mean from as little time as it takes to do it up, to 'forever' - your call. But the important point is, it should allow you to move again should you both wish to, without loss, and hopefully with a profit. Meanwhile, for as long as you are there, even if you find you miss everything about the old house and have regrets about the move - you'll know it'll be fine in time.

But I think that depends on it being yes, yes & yes.

I'm way out in the boonies... we have FTTP.

How often would a "1Gb internet connection" actually be a benefit? AIUI online gaming, ping times are more of an issue than outright bandwidth. B'sides, unless you've got a RIDICULOUSLY high-spec router, and gigabit switching with cat6 all around the house, you're not going to be actually seeing anything like an actual gigabit connection. Especially if there's wireless involved.

Mmm. What would I know about networking, having spent decades in server rooms...

Clearly those decades have addled your brain if you think you can somehow predict that the OPs rural internet will be as good as the recently upgraded one in town!  Have techies become psychic now?

Perhaps you'd be so kind as to point to where I said that...?
  • What where your reasons for moving and for offering on the house?
Make your pro and con list.
You must have researched the area before offering?
Go back to basics and logically work out what you need and why.
If its not right you need to make the decision asap.
    All the best
