Compact laminate

We are looking at kitchen worktops at the moment (Duropal), our current quote is for a standard 40mm worktop, I do like the look of the compact worktops though, but our kitchen provider has said it would cost around £700 more. Is it worth it? We were going for a marble effect worktop.

    seems to be a lot more. you've surely got to consider quartz too, that can't be much more on top of the compact 40mm?

    Who knows? I've just paid a minor fortune to save a tooth, when other people have said at that price they'd just have it out, since its absence wouldn't be seen.
    No one else will care about your worktop, so only you can decide if spending an extra £700 is worthwhile or not. However, FWIW, we have standard Duropal worktops and we think they're nice and hard-wearing. Everyone else probably thinks they're cheapo stuff from B&Q! :D

  • Hi. We initially said no based on the the cost increase but then thought we're probably never going to change it so it might be worth considering. I had just assumed quartz wouldve been 000's. And out of our price range. We have 3 worktops to buy, one a breakfast bar.
  • How much worktop are you talking about?

    If you like the 'continuous' look, albeit still at 40mm thickness, look at Maia. There are probably other alternatives to this now, but I've seen this stuff fitted, and it's pretty stunning - and effectively seamless (if done properly). Thick surface layer too, so scratches can be buffed out.

    The worktops will measure;
    1x 1700mm
    1x 1500mm
    1x 2700mm
    I think our kitchen guy only does Duropal unfortunately, but I could ask. The Maia ones look lovely.

    You guys obviously know what you are talking about. Could you please give a link to a compact worktop?
    No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • Asked the guy about quartz out of interest, he said it would be around 2k

    Do you have an electric hob and built in/under oven? You will need to take the clearances into account when going for a compact worktop as the hob will sit lower and you may have to adjust and lower the oven to compensate, this would also mean that you may have a bigger gap between the underside of the worktop and the top of your oven
  • We will have a gas hob and eye level oven. There will be drawers underneath the hob.
