Carpet right can it be cheaper?

So just moved in the 1950s house. The kitchen diner  has vinyl in the kitchen area and carpet elsewhere. I'd like vinyl throughout. Spoke to carpet right this morning who said because the floor boards in kitchen (suspended flooring) they'd ply line this first. Room is 6m x 3m approx and price £1400. Does this seem right? Any advice to haggle money off? We've got a lot of work at this house to do already. I've emailed a few local independent places but no replies as yet to see if they do ply lining as well. It's not something I want to do myself nor get two different fitters in to do as we have a toddler and so the quickest method is best. Do most flooring companies do this? For that I appreciate it'll cost more but I'm wondering it this seems right. The vinyl I picked was £21 per square metre
Thanks!!

Yes it will almost certainly be quite a bit cheaper with an independent; ask around for recommendations and contact a few more.

carpetright take a percentage for arranging the fitter, it's cheaper if you get the fitter yourself and just get them to pick up the carpet or vinyl from them.
also I would never buy anything other than the top layer from carpetright. I think thats their "loss leader", they make their money on selling gripers, underlay and door metals at a 200% markup and adding 10% onto the fitters charge just for arranging it

When I had my carpet relayed last year, Carpetright were close to 2x the price of the local firm I went with in the end. Despite the fact that  their price didn’t include grippers, etc, the underlay quoted was thinner and the carpet was poorer quality. Im sure I could have gotten money off had I haggled. But I couldn’t be bothered with the hassle. I’d personally avoid like the plague and go with a local firm who won’t try to have your eyes out.

If the floorboards are generally flat hardboard will do the job.  Far easier to do yourself than heavy sheets of ply.

Local fitter charged me £487 to supply and lay 23.75 sq m of 5.5mm ply and fit 33 sq m of vinyl. 4 door bars and adhesive included. Uplift, disposal of old flooring and easing of doors not included. Carpetright seem rather expensive in comparison!

Yes, this entirely. We had them carpet a house. Naively left them to it. We had a lot going on at the time. A few years down the line chucking away receipts,  i noticed they had charged us for grippers but had actually glued the carpets round the edges.
We nowadays go local, have not been disappointed, they have a reputation to keep up.

Yeah the cost of underlay online, and grippers etc is insane compared to what carpetright and scs etc charge, it’s mad.

They try lock you into their fitting e.g scs paid for our fitting making it free but the guy they sent was horrendous - arrived at 9pm instead of our 11am slot, finished about 10:50 and left a right mess. Also ruined all our skirting using that knee kicker they use. Had to chase scs at a senior level to get that sorted. Definitely wouldn’t use them again - partner thought would make any issues easier if we used their fitted but like said above it’s all just subbed out so might as well save money on underlay, grippers and door bars and get someone well regarded

I second (third/forth...) and suggestion to go to a local independent store.  For the money you'll get much better service and quality.
