House purchase held up unexpectedly

I viewed a house at the beginning of last month and was told by the EA he'd already done all his searches on the house he's buying, his sellers are moving into rented to break the chain, basically ready to move in as soon as his is sold. So, wanting to move quickly, I offered the same day and instructed a local high-street solicitor for about 50% more than online conveyancing firms.
I was amazed how quickly everything was moving. Searches came back quickly, mortgage was offered, and I thought we were in a position last week to set a date for exchange and completion. We went for a final viewing at the weekend where we found out that his sellers have changed their mind about moving into rented and won't move until their house is available. Which is in probate.
Apparently this has been going on for ages and our seller offered on the house he's buying back in September.
How long do these things normally take?
Is there any way to find out if probate has been granted or not?

You can check with the Probate Office.Probate might take a coupe of weeks or..... a couple of years.Oh - and whatever they tell you, the estate agent won't know......0

Due to a couple of issues the probate on my uncles estate took over 4 years. It’s very unlikely it’ll take that long, but you just don’t know. I’d put the conveyancing on hold and start looking for another property- this might convince your seller to proceed with the original plan. If not at least you’ll be making progress on finding something else0
