you're getting into free towel on every visit territory for that price.
Yes, we do get a free towel every visit (or used to until COVID, where they apparently can't give us towels or showers any more).  The £75 is the rate for single members - my wife and I get a slight discount for couple membership.
Other gyms nearby start from £110.  One of the local gyms is substantially more than that.

I'm guessing you live in such an expensive area that they are relying on members showing off how little they care about money.

That article conflates health with fitness.
Healthy people (disease free) live long.
    Fitness is a different parameter.
Having high fitness helps to promote health and ability to fight disease.  Just one of the tools, along with diet and mental stimulation.

£75 pcm is the cheapest gym near us.  Where can you get a gym for £21?  Or is it just a sponge mat in the park?
It depends on where you live, how far you are prepared to travel. £75 is on the upper side for here, you're getting into free towel on every visit territory for that price. There is a posh(ish) day spa near me that has a good gym, pool & classes that charges around £55.

But there is so much variation in what someone might consider a good gym, if you have regular personal trainer sessions and loads of top of the range equipment in an idyllic setting close to your home then it might be worth it. Years ago I did some mystery shops in council run gyms and they were pretty good and not too expensive.
The Council gym near me is pretty nice, and really cheap, but I pay £75 a month for one where I can get into the swimming pool whenever I want and it isn't constantly reserved for swimming lessons, schools, clubs, aqua aerobics and various other stuff.

I pay £29.99 a month.  I only use the club for swimming.  Since the first lockdown I have been able to reserve a swim lane for 45 minutes every day..... £1 a day seems like a good price to me.  If I wanted to join any of the classes, that would be free.... I'm shocked about gym prices elsewhere.

To be pedantic, health and longevity don’t necessarily go together either. One thing I’ve looked at in the past is what is called ‘compression of morbidity’ or trying to reduce the time that people live in poor health. That was in relation to costs of an elderly population on the economy or health service. It’s better to live to 90 with 6 months poor health at the end than live to 80 with 6 years.

At the very top-end fitness doesn’t help fight disease, as your immune system becomes compromised. I’ve heard of someone say to a professional cyclist. ‘You look too well to be really fit.’

Such a shame to read this. Not great for customer relations. You will have terms and conditions to sign up. For their own benefit If little else.

My gym suspended membership immediately, have promised to roll any pre paid months and stopped DDs. They also allowed everyone who wanted to remain suspended (not cancelling) if they have covid concerns, to pay £5 a month & waved the £30 admin fee, when they were open so people could remain on the books till they felt ready to return at full price.

They run a full online timetable of classes, 5 a day across various types a great mix daily and all are available free to catch up with. They are all on their FB page and available to anyone member or not. None of this hidden behind a portal stuff for members only .

    They have been amazing.

And yes I pay £70 a month it's not a representation about how much I care about money. I joined to benefit my mental health after falling into a working pattern of 12 hours days and poor work life balance.

I don't spend out on other stuff and take full advantage of the gym, classes, spa and warm pool.  When open I have one morning a weekend have use of spa facilities in the morning with a good book/headphones & music in addition to normal gym/swim time.

For me it's worth that money
