You are required to notify them of any relevant change.

So if you have sold/scrapped a car that was listed in your DRO then you do that.

In your situation you would then say 'I am now using my partner's car and have the same car-related expenditure'

If they ask any further questions, take it from there

Bear in mind that having 'assets' (that includes cash) of over £1000 is also something that you need to notify them  of
  • Must admit i'm confused lol, i have sold my previous car for £500, i'm now trying to buy another one asap or via my partner or family. So whatever i do i have to tell the insolvency service? Even if i sold mine for less than £1000 and bought another only worth £999?

What you tell them depends on what you do.

If you sell one car and buy another, that's what you tell them.
  • It's just that earlier i was told i don't need to if its under £1000.
So if i sell my car and buy another worth £999 i tell them?
If i sell my car and register someone elses in my name which is worth more than £1000 i tell them?
If i sell my car and just use someone elses car worth more than £1000 by getting insured to drive it but not registering it in my name i tell them?

You can't go wrong by telling them, but could get caught out if you don't.. 👍
  • I've spoken to the person who arranged my DRO for me again, he said anything i do whether selling or buying as long as the value is no more than £1000 i don't have to tell them. He also said if i just get insured to drive a car which someone else owns i don't need to tell them either, his only doubt was if i registered a car in my name but wasn't the owner, that would be trickier
  • I’ve seen a car I like which is for sale for more than £1000 (my partner will give me the extra over the £1000 I need) and when I look on Parker’s price guide they value it around £1000 or less. Would I be able to buy this car without having to notify the IS?

You need to keep this as simple as possible, during my DRO, I ran my ex wife`s car, value was approx £1500, but it was registered in her name, I insured and taxed it, insolvency service were fine with this.

When you buy the car, let your partner put there name to it, you can tax and insure it with no problem, just keep your name off the receipt, and that keeps things within the rules, and avoids any problems, don`t make this any more complicated than it need be.

Notifying the Insolvency Service of the new car and its value is not a problem if it is below £1000 and you decide to buy it
Notifying the Insolvency Service that you are now using your partner's car but your car expenses are the same, is not a problem
Either way, you are still within the rules for keeping the DRO

  • Apologies for sounding like a broken record, I’d prefer to not involve the IS at all in this. Therefore can I buy a new car at a price over £1000 but valued by Parker’s at under £1000 without telling the IS?
