Can I get a missed payment removed from my credit file?

I had a look at my online credit report (TransUnion) a few days ago, only to find, to my horror, that I had a missed payment on my PayPal Credit account! My score has dropped -40 points!
So I logged into PayPal and there was no mention of a missed payment in any of my statements. I could see there was a balance of £199 with a minimum payment of £10 due. I also noticed to my disbelief that a direct debit hadn't been set up?! So the missed payment was for the minimum payment of £10.
So my credit report has now dipped, due to what I feel is a totally unfair situation. I know it's my responsibility to manage the account but should PayPal not have contacted my or warned me that a payment was due? Then once the payment was missed to actually notify me!
I have spoken to PayPal who have not been very helpful "It's your responsibility etc. etc.". And they say it's not possible to remove the late payment at all. 
I have tried my hardest to keep my credit rating good as I'm hoping to buy our first home this year. This is now going to make getting a good deal a whole lot harder. £10 is going to end up costing me £1000s in the long term!!
So my questions is -  is there ANYTHING I can do to get the missed payment removed? Has anyone had a similar situation with any success?

    It's very minor assuming the rest of your accounts are well managed. Don't worry about it.

    No one will be looking at your credit score and one missed payment isn't going to cost anyone thousands.  Not even close.

    I'm planning on getting a mortgage so I presume the lender will be taking a good look at my credit report? I could potentially get turned down for a mortgage based on my payment history.

    Not with one missed payment, so that means you must have a lot of other adverse on your files, which you will need to address.

    What do your three files show?

    As ZX81 said one payment issue is unlikely to stop you getting A high street decent mortgage especially if you leave it 6-12 months

    What zx81 means is that nobody will be looking at your score because nobody else sees it. just you and the credit rating agency. The lender will only see your history, not score. They will use your credit history to carry out their own internal assessment/scoring.

    Just TransUnion shows a missing payment for January. No doubt the others will follow suite.

    Update: I went back and forth messaging PayPal, who essentially kept saying "It's my responsibility etc.". However my point is I they didn't make any effort to notify me that I had missed a payment (potentially 2 missed payments actually! 2x £5 each month). It doesn't say anywhere in my online account that I have missed a payment. Nor did I receive an email or letter. So I would have kept missing payments as I presumed my PayPal account had a direct debit set up (which it did but for some reason was cancelled in Aug?!). So complete lack of communication or any customer care on their part.
    Anyway I spoke to the Financial Ombudsman who suggested I ask for their "final response". I did this and PayPal have now escalated the matter and I am waiting for further comms.
    I'm going to argue I don't remember cancelling my direct debit (I genuinely don't) and why would I if the min payment was only £5?! So the error is on their part and that they should remove my missed payments.
    Let's see what happens.

    Good luck with it but do remember that a DD can be cancelled through inactivity (usually after 12 months)
    A direct debit setup is done when you setup the card payments, you normally do it online these days but get a letter confirming the payment is setup, so I wouldn't go in all swinging blaming them for something that isn't their fault

    You not receiving a notification didn't stop you missing the payment though, did it?

    And it's your responsibility to set up a direct debit.  You presumably didn't do this (it is not automatic) so there is no error there.

    As with any financial account it is your responsibility to ensure payments are made on time. Most people would pay close attention to any new account or borrowing to ensure that the payment was made - and whether if set up - the direct debit worked. You can't blame them for not telling you to check your own accounts. As everyone is - you're welcome to try and progress it, but I don't think you'll get very far. If this is your only blemish on an otherwise perfect history, it will make no difference at all to getting a mortgage - even more so as each month passes, and your regular payments show accordingly.
