10 years ago my hubby and I paid £6k for two funerals. This covered all the necessaries.  All planned
Nothing more to pay.  Unless there are extras ordered at the time.
We don't even think about it now

What company did you use may i ask and what were the plans called?
The cooperative. There are 3 plans to choose from

    As for going bust.
Its the coop so not likely.
But pay with a credit card if unsure so your money is safe

The money should be deposited in a separate trust to protect them
My sister took on out with the COOP  many  years ago for £1500  for all that she wanted covered. She wouldn't get it for £1500 now.
I took one out with Golden Charter which they transferred to pay for my husband's funeral when he died. I chose the plan   depending on what I wanted covered- you have a choice - basic coffin, more elaborate  coffin, crematorium fees, cars etc  viewing etc.
These costs   are covered even of the price rises. That is built into the costs.
There are costs not guaranteed to cover ,such as  celebrant's costs , as these   vary on who you have.
There is also a plan  for a direct cremation.

I chose a basic plan so any extras could be paid separately, if required .
Although my plan only covered transport 50 miles to crematorium  and we lived 100 miles away from the nearest, the costs was covered , also the celebrant's costs and   the hospitality at a local hotel afterwards.
That may have been due to the goodwill of the funeral director.

The funeral director claims direct form the company but there is no refund of the funeral costs less than the plan amount.
There has been some publicity recently over the limits on funerals and things included in plans not being allowed due to lockdown rules.

And if the funeral company goes bust ?

Your money is put into a Trust to protect you in that exact event

    Hello again.
Ive given this more thought and decided to take out a plan with age co, but then when i contacted them i was told i had to be over 50 for a plan!
Does anyone know of any providers who would allow a plan for under 50s?
    thanks!

Just about all of them. Try the Co-op or Dignity or Golden Charter.
  • As per zx81, pretty much any funeral director in this country will offer some sort of plan payment option. If you are under 50 they'll be secretly delighted. Age Concern are a charity specifically set up to guide older people, hence they don't deal with under 50's (I'm quite surprised their threshold is even that low to be honest)

So you are best off deciding on a funeral director and taking from there. The plans are nothing more than a financial instrument and most likely offered by the same insurance/finance companies, but the funeral director will be the ones your next of kin will deal with so make sure you are comfortable - recommendations are usually as good a mechanism as any. As you are under 50 it's quite unlikely the staff will be the same people dealing with your next of kin when you die, so there's a lot to be said for going gut instinct about how you "feel" when you visit their website or walk in the door.
