Yorkshire Energy - Final Bill Tariff Increase with no warning

I had been with Yorkshire Energy for about 9 months and was really happy with the service and prices, so was very disappointed when I was told I was being switch to Scottish Power.
What did come as a shock was the substantial increase in energy prices they used on my final bill. Now I know I was on a variable tariff but it was my understanding that they had to provide notice of any tariff changes before they happened. I had NO prior notice of these huge increases. Has anyone else noticed this on their final bill, did anyone get told in advance of this change and are they allowed to implement these changes without any notice?

  • How do you normally get your bills and communications from YE? If by email, check your Spam folder in case one went in there - mind you, some auto-delete after a period of time. At what date on your bill did the rate change take effect?
  • When do you think that the tariff changed took place? If it was after Scottish Power took over your supply under SoLR terms then, yes, you should have been notified. If the SVT was set prior to YE’s demise, then you were on what was to all intents and purposes a Deemed Tariff. Your options were either ‘stay or switch’.
  • Have you checked your email spam folder? It is possible that on the road to insolvency that certain things got missed. However, you do have a problem in that YE is no longer trading so proving where the truth lies may well prove impossible. I doubt that the SoLR will be interested. It will have taken over your account as it was at the point of YE’s failure. Sadly, these are the risks that consumers take by choosing a small supplier.
  • Yes Spear_UK, I noticed the prices were considerably hiked in the last week to 5th Dec'20 when I received my final YE bill today. YE emailed a few months prior saying that on average bills go up by 30% in the winter but it's unusual to let you know the exact prices 3 months after the event. At least Scottish Power have provided overall 'better' market prices from 6th Dec'20. My only concern is that Scottish Power have used their own meter estimate for the first bill to 5th Feb'21 which is far in excess of the actuals. As a result I am overpaying my monthly DD despite being in credit (after allowing for the YE credit due). I requested a reduction in the DD but Scottish Power ignored it. I'm sure it will balance out eventually but I have very little confidence in these dictatorial organisations that put money before fairness.
