For how long could you live with the decor?

I caught the tail end of a tv programme today.  The discussion was about the fixtures, fittings and decor inherited when purchasing a new home.  Mention was made of a bathroom which had an avocado suite and matching green carpet.  I had to laugh because not only did I inherit the same but the walls were also green and  green/white flowery toweling curtains hung at the window.  The green theme continued intermittently throughout the property, irrespective of the overall colour of rooms.

Another (complementary) theme was the Laura Ashley colour reversal.  For example, the kitchen units were painted grey with red trim.  The kitchen wallpaper was red with grey trim.  The lounge walls were papered with an orangey vinyl with the chimney recesses painted....you've guessed it....green.

I had no choice other than to live with it for as long as it took to rip out, replace and redecorate.  I can't tell you how happy I when the last square inch of green disappeared under the paint brush. Curious to hear others' experiences.

My sellers painted the bathroom a horrendous bright yellow - 3 walls and the ceiling. I painted it white the first weekend I lived in the place in preparation for putting my chosen colour on it. The rest of my decor jobs have gone much slower. Lockdown has not been good for my motivation.

Quite a while I think? I'm buying a new build and everything is stark white, it's blinding. Walls are so square and sharp and meaningless. I'd love a higgedy old crazy coloured carpet somewhere or whacky wallpaper to try to figure out what the person who lived in there was smoking when they slapped together.
I find garish decor fascinating. But then I've never had to live in it...

  • We had pink kitchen tiles when bought current house and it was 5 years before we did the kitchen, granted the tiles were painted 3 months after we moved in

Both houses we have bought have been quite boring in that respect. Our 1930s semi was all cream and it stayed that way.

The new build we bought a couple of years ago was all white. The other half was furloughed for a long while last year so he used that time to decorate the house and put our own stamp on it. It feels a lot more homely now than it did when moved in.
  • Doesn't really bother me - what I hate is spending thousands on 'stuff' that looks just as naff in a few years time. I don't like matching things, I think they are tacky.

As long as it's functional I couldn't care less what the decor looks like.
I feel like this a bit. I look at how much people spend on trends and it's laughable.

People today seem less willing to "put up" with hardship.
My second house was a doerupper, bought because it was far more appealing than tiny developer boxes on tiny plots on large estates.  It had no central heating, lousy single glazed draughty windows, a pathetic tired excuse for a kitchen, a downstairs bathroom direct from the kitchen, tired decor and manky carpets.
I moved in and lived with it as I slowly renovated it as i could afford it.  I doubt many would do that today.
