Returning goods at supermarket

Hi
I bought something from Asda and a week later it was reduced to half price. I took the item back packed not used and asked if I could return it and buy it back at the reduced price. I was told I couldn't buy it back that is the policy. Just checking is this right and what are consumer's right about returning and buying back same item?

You can only buy it back at half price if you can find the item after its been put back on shelves

Yes 100% correct .Consumer Rights do not apply .Asda may have allowed you to return the item for a refund ( shop policy not the law ). You could then have gone and bought at half price .0

If their policy allows a return and a refund for the original item, then you can do so. They're not, however, obliged to sell you the item again at the new price, they could simply refuse to do so.0

I'm guessing the item was out of stock at the store, so you wanted to buy your specific item back?

Even if you were able to return it and get a refund, I wouldn't be surprised to find that because of Covid, the staff have to follow a laid down procedure for dealing with the returned item and this may mean either quarantining it for a few days before it can go back on the shelf or maybe wiping down the packaging with anti-viral wipes or spray.
Even if you wished to rebuy it, they might still have to deal with it the same as as any other goods.0
