Payment problems and defaults

Hi I need some advice on defaults, i'm not someone who looks at credit scores and all that. Anyway I never normally had this situation but because of the financial problems most people are in because of Covid etc I found myself a bit out of pocket recently. I was out of the country in Poland with in-laws for a month and half and EE cut my phone off. I was not able to sort it until I was back in UK this Jan. Paid my EE bill etc.
I also made a large payment to MBNA to pay some late payments as a good will gesture even though I cant really afford it. They put a default on my credit file and that's now and that's stopped me getting a loan. I know the government are saying to banks to support people through the pandemic those with problems etc but credit card companies I don't know? is there anyway I can get the default removed by them under these circumstances?
thanks

You could ask, but it's very unlikely.  Even without the default, a loan would be a challenge given your low affordability and history of late payment on a credit card.

Focus on cutting your costs and clearing your existing debt.

    Hi,
Unfortunately the company didn`t know you were in Poland, all they knew was the bill went unpaid.
A default can be registered after between 3/6 missed contractual repayments, you refer to it as "some late payments", how many exactly ?

If you could not afford it, its really always best to speak to them as soon as you can and explain your situation, instead you now have a default which will be there for 6 years.
I`m not sure a complaint would get you anywhere to be honest.

  • It may be an idea to approach them with a softly softly approach as you are technically in the wrong however due to current circumstances they may agree to downgrade the defaults to missed payments but you won’t get it removed all together as it’s factually correct. Usually when you want a company to help you approaching them in a calm friendly and humble manner goes a long way.
  • Thanks guys. Plenty of food for thought. I will see what I can do with them perhaps they could be accommodating but who knows worth a try anyway.
