If you're choosing Ryanair then it's best to get used to the concept that they're trying to get as much money out of you as possible!  Having said that, most, if not all, airlines will apply the difference in fares if rebooking to more expensive flights, even if they waive the usual admin fees to make a change.

If they cancel one leg of your originally booked return trip then they're obliged to offer a refund for the whole booking if that's what you prefer....

I wanted to rebox for September which is also off peak and booking a new ticket is cheaper than changing to a new date

    Take a refund then.

@eskbanker is right, you're entitled to a refund of both your outbound and inbound flights.  As long as both flights are on the same booking.

The issue with booking with Ryanair is that you'll pay extra for the 'convenience' of not having to refund/rebook in this situation.

I don't feel that's morally right, but equally there's nothing stopping them legally from acting like this.

If you're looking at budget alternatives, then there is Jet2 from Birmingham and Wizz from Gatwick (new route from a new base, sub-£10 fares were very common on the new LGW routes last year) and Ryanair from Stansted, depending on where is closer/more convenient for you.

  • I used Ryanair travel voucher from cancelled flight in 2020 to part pay for flight which Ryanair then cancelled this year. I was not refunded the voucher amount only the extra difference I paid as flight was more expensive. Ryanair “voided” the voucher.  Cannot contact Ryanair.
    Anyone experienced same?
  • We had our flights cancelled last March.  Ryanair offered a voucher.  We insisted on a refund.  We’re still insisting. Nothing happening.

Shame you hadn't insisted on a chargeback.
This would have resulted in your money being returned pronto.
