reckon there will be a few moving themselves next week as they have managed  to get a completion date before end of the month but now can't book any removals. Cue stress, bad backs and damaged walls
  • I think whether you do it yourselves or use a professional moving company depends on how much stuff you have, how many heavy items (you’d be surprised how heavy our Miele washer-dryer was), how accessible your property is, how young and fit you are, distance of move etc.

We paid a company with awards and 5* reviews and it was more expensive but worth every penny.  We got them to pack all the kitchen stuff and glass/china and they were brilliant.

Tempting though it is to move ourselves in order to save £2,500, realistically the chance of 2 middle aged people, one disabled, both with bad backs, moving the contents of a 3 bed house out of the house, into a van, out of a van and into the new house are exactly zero- so I’m going for sanity over saving.

    Very sensible @Bonniepurple :)

I remember moving all my belongings from one let to another with a shopping trolley. Those were the days....
  •  Anyone use boxes with no lids to go on a removal van , I seem to have loafs of these and wondered of I could put non fragile stuff in them

The problem if they have no lid, is that its difficult to stack them. If you're moving yourself, then you could pack lightweight non fragile stuff in them and place them on top of all the others once stacked. I don't think removal men will want the hassle of doing that though.
  • We always move ourselves. We basically get rid of any old junk, mattresses, sofas etc and move lightly.

how much stuff do you really need ...

I would never do my own moving, if I could hire a company to pack and move my stuff for me. The packing is so much easier if it's done by a stranger.
