“WSB feels like it’s the working class vs. the hedge funds. The poor vs. the rich,” Twitter user @redditinvestors, who has been following Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum for years, told Yahoo Finance on Wednesday morning. https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/game-stop-phenomena-is-about-the-poor-vs-rich-reddit-wsb-user-204822769.html

I dont get any of this. How can the poor or the younger generation buy enough shares to stop a company listed on the stock market from going bust?I have invested as little as £500 in the past, but that is really the minimim that people should invest, you you consider fees.

Because there is a lot of them, they don't need to invest much each for it to have an effect.sevenhills said:EthicsGradient said:"It's a generational fight, redistributive and all about robbing the rich to give to the millennial 'poor'." There is a very good article in today’s Sunday Times by Oliver Shah. He agrees with you. These people target hedge funds, but in his view they serve a very useful purpose by uncovering worthless companies. They do research, then short a company that is overpriced due for example to fraudulent accounting. Incidentally this does contradict the efficient market hypothesis. It suggests the market price reflects only what people can be bothered to find out, rather than the information that exists. What a surprise.sevenhills said:EthicsGradient said:"It's a generational fight, redistributive and all about robbing the rich to give to the millennial 'poor'." He also pointed out that hedge funds weren’t responsible for the GFC,some even issued warnings, so targeting them in revenge is perverse.
He suggested that targeting hedge funds is akin to targeting someone whomsays something you disagree with cf cancel culture.0 -
Round up 4.5 million users find $20 billion and start buying up shares. Share price rises. The Company issues new shares and starts selling them into the market. Raising fresh capital. Doesn't make the fundamentals of the underlying business any better. Apparently an announcement is expected that a significant number of stores are going to be closed.sevenhills said:EthicsGradient said:"It's a generational fight, redistributive and all about robbing the rich to give to the millennial 'poor'." Did anybody buy a GameStop share? I did just for the sheer gamble and hype around it, a fascinating story. I got a share at £140, prepared to lose it all but I want to see where this rabbit hole goes.... ! The next couple of weeks will be interesting.0
