If it's electronic and it's set on "auto hold" (so it holds the brakes on automatically when at a stop, in gear, without your foot on the brake) the car won't restart until you either tap the accelerator or turn the steering wheel a little.

You need to turn off the "auto hold" to get it to restart when you take your foot off the brake.

It's got an electronic handbrake. The car has been fine up until the last year ( owned from new) so it's not user error!!

Just to update ....I replaced the battery and it seems to have solved the stop /start problem.

Thanks for reporting back. I have a similar problem with a 7 year old Sharan apart from on restart the engine does turn over and then stall. Putting it in park and turning the key always restarts it successfully. Very stressful when it happens at traffic lights with a queue behind!
