Npower "Super Tarriff meter" and my options to switch

Options
hi, i`m on E7 with Npower on what they call a super tarriff, my meter has 3 readings one for day usage, one for night usage and another for heat usage.

If i wanted to change suppliers are there many others that do this same 3 readings system as when ive been on sites such as uswitch they only bring up day and night tarrifs, not heat.

rates are

day @ 21.68 for first 728units each year then drops to 11p per unit
night @ 4.21p per unit
heat @ 5.07p per unit

anyone have any thoughts on the price per unit do they sound reasonable?
sorry for asking newbie questions but i am a total newbie at all this having just moved into my first place on my own

    Hi,

Supertariff was originally in certain regions so only certain Suppliers could support it in their systems. However, all Suppliers should now have updated their systems to handle it. In reality though since Ofgem are not very proactive, it's unlikely.

You need a Supplier that can handle a 2 MPAN metering system. So, anyone who can support E10 can also support this. So, Powergen can and I think Scottish Power. Not sure which others but the billing principle is the same as E10 from a syste point of view.

So, I'm not sure on whether the comparison sites can handle this. If they can handle E10 (never checked) then you could put in E10 which would give you an idea of which Suppliers you could approach. However, you should definately not switch as E10 because that is a totally different meter arrangement and it will cause you a ton of headaches.

I only mean try it on a comparison as E10 just to source a potential Supplier who you could then try one of their quote online tools to see if they also support Supertariff.

Like I said, ALL Suppliers have to be able to support any meter system in England, Scotland & Wales or they are in breach of the BSC. From experience though that doesn't apply to ability to bill a customer on that basis, it is just to be able to register them.

Npower could only support it if you were in the Northern region until recently. That was only because Npower bought out Northern Electric and then moved all their Midlands & Yorkshire customers into the Northern system.

  • much obliged for that comprehensive reply and i get where you are coming from in regards to the E10, look for the suppliers but dont switch to E10.

cheers i shall keep on looking and hopefully find a few suppliers

    Yeah, thats right.

E10 meters have 2 MPAN's so any Supplier who can support them, can support your Supertariff.

I think Supertariff is a NE region only type of meterig (can't remember offhand) but they could always change it to standard E7 if that worked out cheaper for you.

Have you considered comparing to E7 as you will easily be able to switch then. Maybe Npower's E7 could even work out cheaper?

  • yeah ive looked at some standard E7 costs and they are marginally cheaper however on my current setup i get a 2hour afternoon heat boost which obviously, as things stand, goes on the heat tarriff at 5p per unit, if i was on standard E7 the afternoon boost would go onto the more expensive day tarrif i presume which would cost a pretty sum. I think the only way i could go on E7 and it be cheaper would be to scrap my afternoon boost, however then ill worry about getting too cold as im disabled and not active enough to keep that warm hence why im trying to source other super tarriff suppliers to see if i can keep my afternoon boost while undercutting Npowers prices
  • looks like scottishpower might supply me, just received an email quoting

"The unit rates for economy 7 plus tarriff with Scottish Power is.

Prices inclusive of VAT: Standing Charge: 19.18p per day

    Unit Rate: Day rate: 10.144p
    Night rate: 3.845p
    Heat rate: 3.453p"

now i just need to get my calculator out hehe
scottish power tho dont seam to have a telephone number for customer services of any shape or form, are they only an online company? ie if you have a problem must it be resolved by email!

It's just that online is cheaper for them.
Crazy, as your a potential customer and you'd think that would make it as easy as possible for you to give your money to them instead of another supplier.
    Try 0845 2 700 700 or look them up on sayNOto0870.com

I see. Well if you went on standard E7 you boost would be a constant 7 hours one at night. So, any afternoon boost you create without the meters timeswitch, would be at peak time. It really depends on when you use your heating with these tariffs.

SP should be able to do it as they also have E10 metering so their billing system can easily cope with the 2 MPAN set up.

With you being disabled you may also be able to get yourself on your Suppliers Priority Services Register (PSR) which will help you access further services such as cavity wall insulation, loft insulation etc. Suppliers are helping with grants thesedays so it may be worth a thought if it helps. Your BA or local council will also have details listed online about this type of scheme.

  • Mattressback - did you have any joy with scottish power? I am in a very similar situation to you, and Scottish Power can't help as I am outside of their area (I live in Durham). I think its between npower (my current supplier) and EON (formerly powergen but I don't know if they are accepting new registrations). Therefore I expect I am tied into npower unless I get the meter changed which I can't!
