Hi, I'm hoping someone can please help me. My father passed away just before New year, he had multiple policies (I think a bit of dementia contributed to this,) Covering household items like TV, fridge freezer, cooker etc. I have contacted a few of them but once company said they cannot return the full payment that was paid only a month or so before he passed away due to their terms and conditions re cancelling a policy. I challenged this, but am hitting a brick wall. Can anyone please tell me if they are allowed to do this, or does it come down to their discretion to wether they refund it or not. Thanks in advance.

Most of these will be service plans rather than insurance and so not a regulated product. In most cases you'll have a 14 day cooling off period and after that many will have no cancellation.
Ultimately, check the cancellation terms and assuming there is no right to a refund it comes down to goodwill from the companies.0 -
Thank you for your reply Sandtree. It's awful how these companies seem to get away with charging OAP's a small fortune but not willing to give any back, even if its been just over the 14 days.0

Sorry for your loss, but please don't let this issue get to you. I agree with Sandtree, just check the cancellation terms and cancel if you can, but then try to move on. It's done now, so best left in the past.
In my experience these policies are not worth the money anyway and it's cheaper to 'self-insure' over a long period of time. I can sort of understand buying them if you don't have any emergency funds available and are very worried about something breaking down, but in over 30 years I've only had to have home appliances repaired a few times and the money I must have saved on these 'service plan' insurances would have paid for those repairs many times over.
