Amazon UK payment enquiry

Options
I recently registered an account with Amazon and added my debit card. I then ordered a digital audio player which is classed as used from the Amazon warehouse. The item is still in the ordered process. However, payment has been debited from my bank account even when it’s still in the ordered process. According to what I’ve read payment should only be debited from my bank account when the item has reached shipping phase. Please advise.

Firstly, where have you read this? There is no legal requirement for payment only to be taken after dispatch however Amazon by normal practice does normally only take it immediately before dispatch.

Secondly, are you sure the payment has actually been debited and not just ringfenced? When payment authorisation is taken, as soon as you've placed the order, it will show as a pending transaction and your available balance will reduce by the amount of the transaction but the money hasnt actually yet left your account.

I read about it on Amazon FAQ.
I looked at my bank account and the money Amazon debited is pending. According to Amazon my item will be delivered to me the following day but I was wondering will Amazon delay this until the money has actually left my bank account? Because it takes 3 working days for a transaction to be actually debited.

pending means that you have placed an order and committed to spending the money. Amazon will then ask for the money (likely when it is ready to ship) and it will be debited fully.
They won't delay the order waiting for the funds to clear thats not how card payments work. If it shows as pending the bank has usually committed that money to the purchase.

I don’t know why you think this would be so? As this isn’t how any retailer would behave when you order from them.

They have charged your card for the item you have purchased and even though this is showing as pending on your bank account. Your bank has authorised the amount and Amazon will get there payment.

Does a payment you make in a store or supermarket not show as a pending payment? I’m betting it does and it’s the same for Amazon.

Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

    Authorisations
When you place an order, Amazon contacts the issuing bank to confirm the validity of the payment method. Your bank reserves the funds until the transaction processes or the authorisation expires, but this isn't an actual charge.
Some banks call authorisations ‘pending’ or ‘processing’ charges. For more information on their specific policies regarding authorisations, contact the issuing bank.

  • Thanks for the replies.

I received the audio player today. However when I opened the package the box is empty. There is no audio player in the box. This caused me great distress and I contacted Amazon UK and they have refunded me.

However, when I go into my bank account the original payment is still pending but I’m waiting for the payment to be refunded. I was told it will take between 3 to 7 working days for the refund to appear.

I was wondering will the pending payment be cancelled or will the payment go through before it’s refunded?

How disappointing. You are likely to see the debit on your account and the refund possibly on the same day or within a day or so. In circumstances where Amazon has agreed a refund I have always seen the original debit go through, followed by the credit.

If the payment is still pending then NO refund is due, as no money has been taken yet.
Odds on the pending payment will disappear within 14 days from the date it showed.

As a guide. Anytime you purchase anything the retailer can take the full amount, even if they have not dispatched the goods.
