Hi, I didn't really know where to post this so put it under the heading that mentions kindness.

Yesterday I received a private message from another member of the forum to say 'thank you' for some positive comments I made in response to one of their posts a few months ago. They said it meant a lot to them and that what I said had really helped. That person didn't have to thank me and I'd have been oblivious but it really made my day and I was so pleased that the comments I made had helped.

I'm not posting this in order to blow my own trumpet or anything like that but just wanted to say that sometimes comments we make are very helpful to others, whether we realise it or not.

It just goes to show that a few kind words can make a big difference to someone else. And receiving that lovely message made a difference to me, too.

Quite so. The flipside of this is that too many people are too willing to post unkind words ... or rather give (what could be) useful advice in an unkind way. I've been on the end of this in my short time here - I no longer see posts from such people so my forum life is much better. :)

    Thank you.

You're right about the fact that some people are too willing to post unkind comments - it can be hurtful but I've come to realise that they are obviously unhappy people who love to think they're better than others. I've also been on the end of nasty comments and one person really seemed to take against me and made nasty comments whenever I'd made a comment. They seemed to be following me around the forum in fact. In the end I blocked and then reported them, their rude comments were deleted and it stopped. The forum is supposed to be about helping each other, not being critical and I was really touched to receive that lovely personal message from someone who said I'd helped.

Thanks for taking the trouble to comment yourself. x

Good to see Mal, and I'm sure you deserved it as you give some good advice over the years!

Always trying to he polite, and will go the extra mile to help if this is the case (I've communicated via PM in the last weeks with a user on an issue where further clarification was requested, as it was easier to answer with personalised advice having a full picture than redacted one, happy to help in this case), will debate things I don't agree with, some quite passionately on moral grounds, however I've experienced the same as you and Jenni in the past from a very small minority and in this case will give almost as good as is received before reporting, especially when addresses of people I know are published openly with other threats.

Oh thank you! That's another lovely comment. Very kind of you. Yes, I think those who feel it's their duty to belittle others should be pitied really if that's the way they get their kicks. The policy of the forum is to be kind to all. And also for the people who are asking for help not to take the advice they may receive seriously. Thanks again x
