Energy nightmare

Advice needed !!!!

my 2 energy suppliers, Scottish Power (Gas) EDF (Electric) are charging me £250/£300 per month for accumulated debt and usage, They just won’t listen or budge on tariff pricing (Standard Variable tariff). My meters were incorrectly registered to the wrong plot number and serial numbers  were not present on the national database. Ombudsman finally had a result in 2017, claiming SP was the supplier of both utilities. First letter received from SP was Dec 2017 for a business account 🤦‍♂️ but only for Gas. 6months later the account was put to residential and the battle begins. EDF made contact in late 2018 advising they are the supplier of the electric, which was surprising knowing I had two separate utility companies. Anyway at this time I was 3 years into an IVA, all documents were sent over to my IVA supervisor for both debts to be added, both accounts brought to zero and the option to move both supply’s to a duel fuel tariff and to a single company. Fast forward to present day and I’m still in debt, unable to move and paying an obscene amount per month to reduce debt and ongoing usage. SP was sent over successfully to my IVA but for a very small amount, and then months later the account is showing high amounts of debt again. I’m still none the wiser as to why. I’ve had a open complaint for 14 months which has resulted in absolutely nothing, they have only just last month fixed my account login so I can make payments, automated payment line wanted the full balance every time to which I dispute. EDF is ongoing, but again the monthly amount payable is high to clear the debt on the account. I am now out of my IVA so don’t t have the support of my IVA company. EDF for some unknown reason was never entered into my IVA and as result I’m having to clear the debt, slowly but surely.

My apologies for this long winded post and to those that take the time to read, I thank you and hope some advise is received.

It's a bit confusing to understand what you are exactly asking.
    The first questions to ask
    - why are you on a standard variable rate, you are probably paying the highest prices for your energy have you asked to go on a different tariff with your current supplier to save some money until you clear the debt?
    - have you been reading your meters yourself and providing regular meter readings to the supplier
    - are the bills based on estimates or actual readings?
-how much have you actually paid and how much do you actually owe?
I don't think any of us are going to be able to help with your problems in 2017/18 with the mix up with suppliers and registration etc, particularly if an iva took ownership of It. I think you need a general sort out. It might be worth speaking to citizens advice bureau equipped with all your bills, disputes and settlements so they can advise and help you make a plan.
  • Hi niktheguru,

I’ve request a tariff change with EDF but the alternatives seem to be more expensive, I don’t know why. I am supplying regular monthly readings to both companies to avoid estimated bills. The debt for EDF is £2400, SP £2200, latest bill for 36 days usage for gas was £99.42 (SP) electric £119.25 for 48 days usage (EDF)  IVA has just finish in December 2020 and this is how we discovered that EDF hadn’t been placed on the creditors list. Total paid to so far, SP £100.00 EDF ££335.21

    thanks for your reply.
  • Have you got a smart meter to keep an eye on your usage?
how much have you paid since you moved into the property? Or is the debt due to non payments?
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

Andy - what details are you giving EDF ?   The comparison sites need an accurate Annual Consumption  - look back on your bills for about 12  months ago and find some readings with the letter A or C against them. Now read your meter today.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Hi Welshmoneylover, no I don’t have a smart meter installed. I bought the property new in 2002 believe it not and it’s took until 2017 to find out who is the supplier, apparently it’s changed hands back in 2005 but as the meters were not registered to my address we received no bills for either utilities.

So were you not paying for electricity and gas for 15 years?
  • Apparently not.

Think how much money must be stashed away just waiting for the bills to start rolling in then.

Surely it doesn't take 15 years to find out who your supplier is? The onus was on your developer who you bought the "new property" from in 2002. You could have placed it upon them to sort it out once you knew you weren't able to register your energy.
I'm not sure they'll let you say that it wasn't your fault if you waited so many years not payinf for the energy you were using. Did the ombudsman decision write off any of the usage, as it doesn't sound like the amount you say you owe mkes up for 15 yrs usage! (unless you use very little energy)
Seeing as you've already been to the ombudsman a few years ago I suspect no one from the forum is going to be a huge amount of help as you clearly have quite a complex case of which you wont have given the full details on a forum for which you can get the best help. You need professional advice from someone who knows all the ofgem rules, and can independently look at your entire situation with all the facts to see if you're on the right track.
Given that you are getting nowhere with a 14 month complaint it may be worth going back to the ombusman again, but make sure you have a clear question.
    Good luck
